GoGet vs. Uber Carshare: Car Hire Rates Comparison

Considering renting a GoGet car or Uber Carshare for your car rental needs in Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane?

Let's break down the costs of both carshare options to help you make an informed choice.

GoGet are the experts in carsharing in Australia. Established in Newtown in 2003, we’re Australian owned and we’ve been operating for more than 20 years, with over 8 million trips and counting.

When it comes to GoGet and Uber Carshare, you'll notice a few differences. GoGet owns and professionally maintains and cleans its cars, which are available for members to hire all the time, while Uber Carshare, a peer-to-peer platform, relies on cars owned by individuals in your neighbourhood. This gives GoGet the ability to offer a consistent service and control the consistency, reliability and availability of our carshare network.

Too easy. I’ve tried a couple of car share options with different companies and I must say, GoGet has been the easiest for me to deal with. Everything from collecting the card for vehicle access to actually getting up and running was a smooth experience. The vehicle was as described, clean and available at the expected location within close proximity to my house. No issues with fuel, pick up or drop off (I’ve had issues with other providers with lock box etc). Will definitely be using them again.

GoGet vs Uber Carshare: Who is the cheapest?

Let's get down to brass tacks – cost. With GoGet, you'll find transparent and competitive pricing that's hard to beat. No upfront deposits or booking fees mean you can keep more of your hard-earned cash in your pocket and transparent pricing means that there are no nasty surprises in store.

Uber Carshare may appear to have lower headline rates, though be aware that there are additional charges not included and there are no free kms included in their daily rates, while GoGet includes 100km/day for free.

Membership Options

Flexibility is the name of the game. GoGet offers a range of membership options to suit your needs and your wallet. The higher your membership level, the lower the hourly and daily vehicle booking rates and the more you save, giving you the flexibility to choose the membership that suits your specific usage needs. And if you're a student, senior, business or not-for-profit organisation, check out our GoStudent, GoSenior or Business plans for awesome discounts!

Uber Carshare doesn’t have any different membership plans which means that, although there are no membership fees, there are also no options for regular users to access lower usage rates. There is also a booking fee of $6.99 each time you make a vehicle booking which goes towards maintaining the Uber Carshare platform.

Usage Rates

While the headline rates might appear lower with Uber Carshare, you may find yourself shelling out extra for a hefty $150 refundable upfront deposit on your first trip as well as a booking fee of $6.99 each time you make a vehicle booking plus an additional compulsory basic damage cover. With GoGet there are no deposits or booking fees and insurance is included in our published rates.

With Uber Carshare, usage rates and km costs are determined by individual car owners and are subject to fluctuate or change without prior notification. Similarly, the availability of Uber Carshare vehicles is determined by vehicle owners and may also change without notice, while GoGet cars are always available for hire and the rate doesn’t fluctuate.

Numbers are great - but how does that actually stack up in terms of a realistic total booking cost on each platform?

Well, glad you asked, because we’ve provided some example trips below. Check them out!

GoGet Rates vs. Uber Carshare Rate Comparison Examples

Now, let's cut to the chase and compare rates. We've taken four example trips to give you a clear view of how the numbers stack up:

  • A day around town
You've got errands to run and shopping to do around Melbourne. You book a Kia Cerato for three hours and drive 15km.

    GoGet comes in at $32.40 * (25.20 + 7.20)
    Uber Carshare comes in at $50.04 ** ($43.29 + $6.75)
    With GoGet, you’d save $17.64

  • A day at the beach
You need the car for a full day and plan to drive to the beach, the total round trip is 90km. You choose a Kia Sportage SUV so a few friends can tag along.

    GoGet comes in at $108.00 * (108 + 0.00)
    Uber Carshare comes in at $141.59 ** ($93.89 + $47.70)
    With GoGet, you’d save $33.59

  • A long weekend away
You’re planning a relaxing 3-day weekend away and you plan a scenic 350km round trip. You decide to take the Toyota Rav-4 for the comfort and extra legroom. You also opt to lower your damage cover from $2,000 to $500 for the duration of the trip for your peace of mind.

    GoGet comes in at $401.20 * (324 + 17.50 + 59.70)
    Uber Carshare comes in at $480.79 ** ($295.29 + $185.50)
    With GoGet, you’d save $79.59

  • A week-long holiday
You’re planning an interstate getaway for 7 days but only plan to use a vehicle sporadically. You decide to take the Toyota Rav-4 again and estimate you’ll travel about 350km. You also opt to lower your damage cover to $500 for the duration of the trip.

    GoGet comes in at $895.30 * ($756 + 139.30)
    Uber Carshare comes in at $865.19 ** ($679.89 + $185.50)
With Uber Carshare, you’d save $30.11

Remember if you do end up driving more than expected, the story may change as Uber Carshare has no free kms included, unlike the 100km/day you receive with GoGet.  The additional kms can add up if you use it more than you plan to.

If you do choose Uber Carshare remember before you hit the road to give the service logbook a quick once-over. With Uber, it's in your hands to confirm the vehicle's up-to-date with servicing and well-maintained by the owner because, hey, better to be safe than sorry.

Vehicles used in the comparison examples above from both Uber Carshare and GoGet are like for like for each comparison (same make, model and year) and the GoGet rates used are GoFrequent rates. The $30/month goFrequent membership fee is excluded from the comparison. Rates are taken directly from each carshare provider’s website booking system, though for Uber Carshare prices are set at a car by car level and both cheaper and more expensive alternatives were available.

Vehicles used from both Uber Carshare and GoGet are like for like for each comparison, attempting to match make, model and year. It is also important to note that Uber Carshare rates are determined by individual car owners and will differ car by car. The rates provided above give a realistic side by side comparison, however, there were both cheaper and more expensive alternatives available.
