Dive into Manly's Underwater Wonderland: A Day at Cabbage Tree Bay

We may not have the barrier reef here in Sydney, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have hidden underwater wonderlands ready to explore. The Eastern suburbs has Gordons Bay, and the Northern Beaches have Cabbage Tree Bay. A not-so well-known local gem promising pristine waters, vibrant marine life, and some of Sydney’s best beach vibes

A Day Out at Cabbage Tree Bay

Getting There

Manly is a bit of a mixed bag for public transport as there are no trains or trams – though it more than makes up for it with the world’s most beautiful ferry ride. We may be biased, but name us a better one if you can!  If you’re travelling from the city this is hands-down your best option. You can either choose the original Manly Ferry, which takes around half an hour, or shave a few minutes off your trip with the Manly Fast Ferry, though this will cost you a bit more.  If Circular Quay is a bit out of your way, the area is pretty well served by buses. Buses run to Manly from the City (routes 170X, 151) from Chatswood (routes 143, 144, and 136), as well as from other areas of the Northern Beaches.

Or if you need to drive, why not grab a GoGet? On-street parking is pretty scarce, especially on a hot day, though check out our guide to parking in Manly for some help. The closest on-street parking to the steps at Fairy Bower is on Bower Street, though these are mostly time restricted and do fill up quickly on a hot day. There is a car park at Shelly Beach, though it’s unfortunately not free and also gets very busy.

The Aquatic Reserve

The reserve covers around 20 hectares, including the bay, rocky shores, and beaches from the south end of Manly Beach to the northern end of Shelly Beach Headland. It’s best accessed from either Fairy Bower Beach, off Marine Parade or from Shelly Beach. There are steps leading onto the rocks near the Fairy Bower rock pool, though if the swell is rough, or the tide is very high, this can be pretty daunting. We definitely recommend entering the water from Shelly Beach if this is the case.

Snorkel into a Kaleidoscope of Colour

This is one of our absolute favourite things to do in Cabbage Tree Bay. Don your mask and fins (or join a guided snorkel tour), and prepare to be mesmerized. You might even spot a shy cuttlefish camouflaged against the rocks or a wobbygong shark resting on the sandy bottom. If you’re worried by the word shark don’t be, they are generally placid unless provoked. And have pretty small teeth to boot.

You might also be lucky enough to spot blue groupers, shovelnose rays, seadragons or one of the bay’s resident green turtles. Remember, this is a protected reserve so admire the marine life all you like, but don’t touch or harm them in any way!

The Manly to Shelly Swim

If you’re a fan of ocean swimming, this is one that you really need to experience. The swim usually starts from the southern end of Manly Beach, and finishes 750m away at Shelly Beach, though most swimmers will do the return leg for a 1.5km round trip. If you don’t want to swim it alone, join the Bold and Beautiful Swim Squad who do the swim every single day at 7am come rain, shine or mid-winter chill. They’ll be happy to take you through how to stay safe in the surf and there are swimmers of all ages and ability groups so you’ll be sure to find someone to swim with. Feel free to bring fins or paddles along too.

If 1.5km is a bit much for you, you can easily jump out of the water at Shelly Beach and stroll back along Marine Parade – it’s a beautiful walk.

Fuelling Your Adventures:

After a morning of exploration, your appetite will be singing and luckily, you won’t be stuck for options. In fact, your biggest problem will be trying to pick where to go. The Boathouse on Shelly Beach is a delicious option – though come hungry as the portion sizes are on the large side. Or stroll to nearby Manly for a plethora of food options. Fika (try the Skagen toast) and Norma’s Deli (save space for the baklava) are particular GoGet faves

Whether you're seeking a day of underwater exploration or relaxation in the sun, Cabbage Tree Reserve in Manly has something for everyone. Pack your swimmers, grab your sense of adventure, and prepare to discover a hidden gem right on your doorstep.
