In our quest to discover all Melbourne has to offer with carshare, we are planning to experience a new part of the great city each month and send our findings your way. This month we spent a day in South Yarra, trying some of the local produce and restaurants. This is a list of what we loved most, but if we’re missing anything important, please let us know! If you’re a local, maybe you’ll find your newest neighbourhood haunt. If you’re from out of town, perhaps you’ll decide to get yourself a GoGet, and explore south of the river!
Great coffee – Husband
Husband South Yarra – 377 Malvern Road, South Yarra
This tidy South Yarra cafe makes a great cup of coffee and has a good selection of simple cafe food. The food ranges from very simple pre-made wraps and muffins, all the way up to basic cooked breakfast and lunch options like scrambled eggs on toast or a pulled pork sandwich. As an added bonus, it’s away from the hustle and bustle of Chapel Street, so it’s a great alternative to the myriad of cafes that you can find in South Yarra and surrounds.
The Prahran Market
Prahran Market – on Commercial Road between Chapel Street and Balmoral Street
(which is actually in South Yarra!), is the place to go for fruits, vegetables, and most of your other food. The best option for the Prahran Market
is to bring your own trolley and pile it high with healthy food. If you buy too much at the market, there are plenty of GoGet cars nearby that you can rent by the hour, so feel free to go ahead and indulge! Extra points: get to the Prahran Market
early on a Sunday and find the guy who will sell you a box of produce for $10. It’s not super
fresh, but you can make a nice vegetable lasagne or casserole on Sunday night and eat it throughout the week.
Brother Burger and the Marvellous Brew (South Yarra) – 560 Chapel Street, South Yarra
OK, maybe this isn’t one to bring a GoGet to, as this restaurant has quite an extensive beer menu. However, they also have soft drinks if you choose to have a designated driver. And if beer isn’t your thing, they also have a good selection of wine. All that being said, it’s a great restaurant for burger lovers, with their standard range being 100% Wagyu Beef. And of course they have a chicken option, as well as two vegetarian burgers on menu. Gluten free buns are also optional. You may have tried Brother Burger’s
original location in Fitzroy, but their South Yarra location far surpasses it, in our opinion. Why? Because of the fantastic beer selection! Well worth the adventure.
A suburb with a lot to offer, we’ve only scratched the surface here.
