Where to Park in St Kilda

St Kilda is a beachside suburb of Melbourne that’s frequented by both tourists and locals. St Kilda also has a great night-life and is home to some of Melbourne’s most famous attractions, including Luna Park, The Esplanade Hotel, and Acland Street. Just 6km from Melbourne CBD, St Kilda also hosts several of Melbourne’s biggest events and festivals.

St Kilda’s a busy place, even without an event on. If you can, try to get to St Kilda by public transport. Trams run regularly to St Kilda from the city, or you can catch the tram from nearby Balaclava train station.

If you do need to drive to St Kilda, it’s not the easiest place to park in the world. However, there are spots to park in if you plan ahead. Read on for our guide on where to park in St Kilda.

Street Parking in St Kilda

Street parking in and around St Kilda is tricky, especially when you’re close to the beach precinct. The City of Port Phillip has set up permit zones in the back streets, which can only be parked in by local residents with the correct permit. So don’t assume you’ll be able to cruise the back streets for a park.

However, there are still plenty of streets with metered parking, with hourly rates ranging from $1.90 to $5.40. The City of Port Phillip has an excellent list of ticket machines with everything you might want to know about local street parking. Look up the streets you’re hoping to park on, or find a price you’re willing to pay, and mark it on a map before you cruise into town.

While we’re talking about street parking, if you’re looking for a day out at Luna Park you’ll find plenty of metered parking nearby. All-day metered parking typically costs around $10.80 and is situated on Shakespeare Grove.

Remember to read the street signs and leave yourself plenty of time to find a spot if you’re going to try to rely on a street parking option.

A special mention to a particular street parking option. The City of Port Phillip Council offers street parking along the Fitzroy Street Precinct, one of the busiest strips in St Kilda. Parking rates are as follows:

  • Summer (October to March): $3.80 per hour, $8.70 maximum
